Sudbury is the largest City in Northern Ontario, and ranks as the 24th largest metro area in Canada. Not too shabby. Sudbury has always been known for its nickel and mining industry. But over the years, its economy has evolved as the hub for educational, research, healthcare and retail in Northern Ontario. Sudbury is also home to a very large Francophone population, which has influenced its arts, food and economy in different ways.

Sudbury is in the heart of the Canadian Shield. It has over 300 lakes within its City limits, which is tops for any city of municipality in Canada. So, if you’re a boat lover, Sudbury is certainly a great place to be. Because of the amount of lakes so close to Sudbury, there’s a lot of activity on the water, which, unfortunately in some situations can lead to boating accidents. Sudbury has the largest amount of boating accidents per capita in Ontario. So, if you plan on boating in and around the Sudbury area, be careful. There’s a lot of beauty on the lakes, but you need to pay attention to where you’re going to ensure you don’t get into a boating accident.

Nickel deposits were found in the Sudbury basin which has led to a large mining industry in Sudbury. It also has a large forestry industry which is committed to sustainable forestry. Inco and the Falconbridge Mines are based out of Sudbury and make up a large percentage of Sudbury’s workforce. Unfortunately, Inco was bought out by a Brazilian company named Vale. Falconbridge was bought out by a Swiss company called Xtrata. This has had a negative impact on the local economy in Sudbury which has seen a dip in employment rates since the change.

Northern Ontario’s most popular tourist attraction is called Science North, and it’s located in Sudbury. Sudbury’s major landmark is the Big Nickel, which symbolizes Sudbury’s proud tradition in the nickel industry. If you’ve never seen the Big Nickel, it’s exactly that; a giant nickel.

If you have been hurt or injured in a car or boating accident in and around the Sudbury area, you will likely be treated through Health Sciences North at one of its various sites around town. Kirkwood, Ramsey Lake, Regent Street and Cedar are all sites for Health Sciences North. These are the major hubs for health care services for North Eastern Ontario. Laurentian Univeristy, Cambrian College and College Boreal also call Sudbury home.
